Personal Statement
I am interested in line, color, space, and material. I create site-specific environments that not only redefine the architectural space, but also challenge the traditional art viewing experience. I create webbed structures that are experienced by walking throughout the space- under, over, in and out and are not just taken in visually. While stimulating from a distance, my work takes on a new life when the viewer interacts more intimately with the piece.
My recent work started as a collection project. I requested donations of clothing from anyone and everyone interested. With no specific parameters, the donations ranged from discarded, beat up t-shirts to bridesmaid dresses, etc. (This applies to all recent installations, since 2011.) Knowing that each piece was chosen by someone and specifically sent to me for my installations sets up a history and connection to the clothing I manipulate. My installations, however, are not an illustration of individual narratives. The general narrative, of collection and universal signifiers, takes precedence in the work. They literally create a social network and physical representation of personal connections and memories. The structure of the installation constructs a space where viewers come as individuals, but ultimately gather together and experience the piece, as a collective- supporting the concept of bringing individuals together as a group. The content of each installation varies dependent on where the material/clothing originates.
My manipulation of the material- as clothing- activates a dialogue of form and function. The deconstruction and reconstruction of an everyday object, provides content to the piece beyond the formal elements.
